ITV SERIES
No Time to Waste, Lesson 1: East-West Educational Project
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Given materials and instruction, the learner will be able to:
- outline and discuss the steps necessary to tackle an environmental problem
- understand the process of recycling paper
- discuss the importance of recycling efforts in fihting environmental problems.
MATERIALS
Each group of 34 students will need the following
- bowl or other large container suitable for mixing
- egg beater or other heavy-duty stirrer
- large spoon
- old newspaper source of water
- wire screen (window screen, approximately 30 cm X 30 cm)
- flat tray or pan starch
- measuring device-preferably a graduated cylinder
- chart paper and markers
PRE-VIEWING ACTIVITIES
1. Review with the class the steps in making an outline.
Stress the importance of how an outline helps to organize
information. Emphasize that an outline is brief and
contains only the important points discussed.
2. Have students brainstorm a list of some environmental
problems that exist in the community. Record the list
on the board.
NOTE: Arrange for household waste
(especially newspaper) to be part of the list.
3. From the list, have the students select a problem they would like to do
something about. This could be done on an individual basis, in groups, or as
a class.
FOCUS FOR VIEWING
While viewing the video, have your students outline the steps taken by the students in the show to tackle the environmental problems they selected as projects.
VIEWING ACTIVITIES
View Lesson 1: East-West Educational Project from the No Time to Waste series in its entirety.
POST-VIEWING ACTIVITIES
Environmental Group Project - At the conclusion of
the show divide the class into groups of three or four.
Select a leader for each group. Have members of the
group compare notes from the show and develop a "group
outline" for tackling an environmental problem.
Distribute the chart paper and markers, select a recorder
for each group, and have the recorder list the steps
of the group's outline. Post the charts around the
room.
Activity Sheet 1: Do Your Own Recycling - Point out that recycling is one of
the many ways environmental problems are handled. Many materials can be recycled.
Old newspaper (refer to your list) is one of those materials. The exercise
on Activity Sheet 1 will
show how news print is recycled.
Appoint a materials handler for each group. Have the materials handler get
the necessary supplies from a central area and then distribute Activity Sheet
1.
After students have finished the activity, develop the concept that many materials, like paper, can be recycled. Further, develop the idea that this is one way an environmental problem, waste paper, is tackled today.
EXTENSIONS
Have students return to the original list of environmental
problems developed earlier in the class. Have the students
zero in on an individual problem and develop a list
of specific actions the group could take to battle
the problem.
View Lesson 6: What a Waste from The Outside Story With Slim Goodbody series
or Tool and Trash Detectives (#1067-0607) from the 3-2-1 Contact series.
