South Carolina ETV
Biology: What Happens When A Cell Divides? (Grades 10)
MASTER TEACHER
Gloria Brigman
OVERVIEW
This lesson is designed to show the students how a cell reproduces. Through the use of video, students will see the different phases of mitosis.ITV Cell Biology Resource, Lesson 5: DNA replication and Mitosis
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to
- define mitosis
- List the phases of mitosis explain what happens in each phase of mitosis
SC MATH/SCIENCE STANDARDS MET
Science Achievement Standards Area 1, Strand 1
Grades
9-12 investigate how different organisms maintain
homeostasis
investigate and describe the role of mitosis in the growth and maintenance
of organisms
Math Achievement Standards Measurement
Estimate, construct, and use measurement for descriptions and comparison by:
- constructing an object or figure according to specific measuring requirements
- choosing appropriate techniques, units, and tools to measure quantities.
MATERIALS
Per laboratory station
- paper rectangles
- paper circles
- scissors
- glue (white, non-toxic)
- elbow macaroni
- dental floss
- thin spaghetti
- metric ruler
VOCABULARY
mitosis
interphase
prophase
chromatids
metaphase
spindle fibers
anaphase
telophase
cytokinesis
PRE-VIEWING ACTIVITIES
Paper rectangles,
paper circles, scissors, glue, elbow macaroni, dental
floss and spaghetti are placed at each lab station
or working area earlier.
Say, "Now we will learn how a cell reproduces
Pass out the laboratory Activity Sheets.
FOCUS FOR VIEWING
To give students a specific responsibility while viewing, ask them to raise their hands the first time one of the vocabulary words are heard.
VIEWING ACTIVITIES
Advance the video
DNA Replication and Mitosis to mitosis and cytokinesis.
Pause the video after the definition of mitosis is
given. Say,"Mitosis
is cell reproduction. The sorting of chromosomes
resulting into two identical nuclei. One cell becoming
two cells.
Say, "The next phases of mitosis are observable.
Prophase will follow. Listen and see what happens
to the chromatin material in the nucleus of the
cell. Resume the video.
Pause the video when the words protein spindle-fibers
are shown on the screen. Say, "Following prophase comes metaphase. Let's see what happens to the
chromosomes in metaphase." Resume the video.
Pause the video when the narrator says "DNA instructions." Say, "Chromatids have been separated and moved to opposite sides of the cell." Resume the video.
Pause the video when the narrator says, "the cell can now divide." Say, "Telophase is the final phase of mitosis involving the chromosomes but now the entire cell needs to divide." Resume the video.
POST-VIEWING ACTIVITIES
Say, "Let's
take a few minutes to discuss our vocabulary words." (10
minutes)
Say, "Now it's time to make the phases of mitosis "
ACTION PLAN
Have students investigate the relationship between mitosis and cancer. What phase of mitosis will you expect to observe more frequently.EXTENSION
History. Investigate the beginning study of mitosis. When were the phases first observed and diagrammed.
