ETV Program Highlights for October 2017

ETV presents programs of interest to teachers and students! In October, ETV features a revealing story about Edgar Allan Poe, specials for National Disability & Down Syndrome Awareness Month and new PBS Kids programs for Bully Prevention Month and Halloween. Don’t miss Palmetto Scene on Thursdays and This Week in South Carolina every Friday. ETV is your destination for learning!

Reel South –120 Days

Reel South is a new anthology series that highlights the masterful, provocative Southern tradition of storytelling, exploring the alluring and complicated region and its diverse voices and points of view. Hosted by platinum-selling, Grammy-winning recording artist Darius Rucker (Hootie & The Blowfish), the series includes independent, documentary films about the American South. In this program, due to his immigration status, family man Miguel Cortes must make a tough choice. After an unexpected traffic stop, a North Carolina judge has offered Miguel 120 days to get his affairs in order and self-deport to Mexico - leaving his wife and two daughters. Will he leave for Mexico or disappear into the shadows in his adopted homeland? Watch preview

Gene Doctors

Every year more than a million babies are born around the world with a hereditary disease. This revolutionary breakthrough in science is transforming the lives of patients and their families.

Frontline: Putin’s Revenge, Part 1 and Part 2

Part 1: Amid claims he hacked the 2016 election, the inside story of Vladimir Putin's conflict with the U.S. An investigation of Putin's mounting grievances with the U.S. and his efforts to exact revenge leading up to the presidential election.

Part 2: How the U.S. struggled to confront Vladimir Putin over Russian involvement in the 2016 election. The film investigates how revenge may have motivated Putin to target American democracy, and the U.S. responses under Presidents Obama and Trump.

Edgar Allan Poe: American Masters

Discover the real story of the notorious author, starring Denis O'Hare as Edgar Allan Poe. The program explores the misrepresentations of Poe and reveals how he tapped into what it means to be human in a modern and sometimes frightening world.

Southern Lens: Jackson Sandwich

Filmmaker Jack Lucido chronicles the early diagnosis of his son's autism and the successful treatment that followed in his film, "Jackson Sandwich." The film won a CINE Golden Eagle.

Reel South: Tommy! The Dreams I Keep Inside Me

This is a touching portrait of Tommy Onorato, a 60 year-old man with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the life-long dream of singing with a Big Band. Armed with his golden voice and his All-American optimism, Tommy embarks on a quest to have the "world on a string.”

Generation A: Portraits of Autism and the Arts

This program takes a close look at creative therapies and art programs which young people on the autism spectrum are utilizing to reach their highest potential. The film provides a platform for youths with autism to speak frankly about their challenges and their dreams; and to showcase their talents which include dancing, singing, painting and animated filmmaking. Interwoven are interviews with experts in the field, some of whom are also on the spectrum such as autism role models, Dr. Temple Grandin and Dr. Stephen Shore, who offer their frank and moving insight.

Ready Jet Go!

Two new episodes premiere October 9 and 10:

Castaway Carrot/Jet Can’t Sleep

After an afternoon on the Moon, Celery, Jet, and Sunspot discover, as they fly to Earth, that they have mistakenly left Carrot on the Moon! Then the saucer malfunctions and they receive news of a possible solar storm headed their way. In a nail-biter, Jet and Sunspot do a mid-outer space repair job and along the way they all learn about Earth storms as compared to storms on other planets.

Airs: Oct. 9 at 7:00 a.m. and at 2:00 p.m. on SCETV

 

Not a Sound/Mindy in Space 

The kids get information from Dr. Rafferty and then travel to outer space to confirm the amazing fact that there is no sound in outer space... even though Jet is convinced he's heard sounds all over the solar system. After Mindy laments the fact that she's still only 4 and still can't go to space with the other kids, Sydney, Jet, Sean, and Sunspot plan a full makeshift, cobbled together "Day in Space" right there in Jet's yard.

The Last Tough Customer/Brain’s Chess Mess

In The Last Tough Customer, the Tough Customers realize it's time to quit bullying and set out to find a new hobby - but can Molly ever truly change her ways?

Then in Brain's Chess Mess, Brain starts a chess club at school to improve his game and beat Los Dedos, the local chess master. Who knew the best player in the club would be...Rattles?!?

So Funny I Forgot to Laugh/The Best Day Ever

In So Funny I Forgot to Laugh, Arthur thinks his jokes about Sue Ellen's new sweater are all in good fun but Sue Ellen's feelings are hurt. Has Arthur become...a bully?  Then in The Best Day Ever, it's a beautiful afternoon and everyone is reminiscing about their "best days." Everyone, that is, except Arthur. Is it possible he doesn't have one?

Sesame Street

Season 47 premiere continues in October, including a Halloween episode! Elmo is excited to wear his homemade Galactic Stan costume but becomes jealous of another boy's store-bought costume. Alan and Abby help Elmo realize that he doesn't need a fancy costume to be Galactic Stan; he just needs to use his imagination.

Airs: Oct. 23 at 11:30 a.m. on SCETV and 2:30 p.m. on SCETV Kids

Arthur and the Haunted Tree House

In this new hour-long special, Halloween is sure to be the spookiest ever for Arthur and his friends. While trick-or-treating, Francine meets an elderly woman with a very mysterious past, while Binky finds himself at Mr. Ratburn's amazing haunted house (that's scarier than math class!). And as for Arthur, Buster, and Ladonna? Their tree house sleepover seems to be haunted… but by what? Also this month, three new episodes of Arthur from Season 21 will premiere.

Airs: Oct. 23 at 7:00 a.m. on SCETV and at 8:00 a.m. on SCETV kids and re-airs through Oct. 31

Odd Squad

This popular series premieres a new Halloween episode entitled Haunt Squad.  Odd Squad is haunted by a ghost. Curriculum: algebraic thinking - patterns. Safe House in the Woods - Owen and new recruit Ozlyn wait out a storm while transporting a creature. Curriculum: measurement - capacity. Also, look for three other premieres that air this same week on the same schedule!

Splash and Bubbles

The Reeftown Rangers visit a spooky cave in a new Halloween episode! After visiting a spooky cave, Splash and his friends visit the spookiest place they know, the cave of the old hagfish, who lives deep in the abyss. Dunk gets spooked by a creature in his home and thinks it's a monster, only to discover a Baby Sea Urchin who is hiding from a giant "Thing,” which circles in the waters above the reef - Mayor Sting!

Airs: Oct. 16 at 10:30 a.m. on SCETV and at 5:30 p.m. on SCETV Kids

Curious George

The hit Halloween special Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest is back so hang onto your hats! It's George's first Halloween in the country, and Bill tells him and Allie about the Legend of No Noggin -- a spooky tale about a hat-kicking scarecrow who haunts the countryside on Halloween. But is the legend really real? George and Allie are determined to find out by taking a picture of No Noggin in hat-kicking action. But first George needs to figure out what he's going to be for Halloween so he can win the costume contest at the town Boo Festival. Will George's quest for the perfect costume interfere with his quest for the truth? Only the curious will find out!

The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About Halloween!

The Cat in the Hat takes Nick and Sally on the craziest Halloween ride in this one-hour seasonal special filled with howlers and shockers and scary fandangles, big laughs and music and fun from all angles! Their fright-filled adventure takes them deep into the Oooky-ma-kooky Closet where Nick and Sally discover the very best Halloween costumes ever!

Cyberchase

A new Cyberchase Halloween episode marks the premiere of season 11.

Palmetto Scene

SCETV’s weekly magazine-style series airs each Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and focuses on SC arts and culture, business and economy, education, health, politics, and technology.

This Week in South Carolina

This SCETV public affairs series features interviews with the newsmakers and policymakers of the week and is produced by the University of South Carolina with ETV.  Hosted by with Charles Bierbauer, former ABC and CNN correspondent and Dean of USC’s School of Information and Communication, the timely programs air each Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. on SCETV. 

Airs: Fridays at 7:30 p.m. on SCETV 

Repeats: Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. on ETV World
